I think he has a big black felt marker that he is putting back in his pocket ... right after making those doodles behind the pole.

Nice composition - I am stumped - what is creating the shadow behind the pole? Looks likes a big winged bug has landed on the rear side of the pole, (I am guessing its the light standard at atop the pole?) - that is a high lighting situation isn't it?- is it noon?

Good guess, Paul: the 4 lights at the top of the pole are making that shadow, in the bright early afternoon light.
